With apologies to Captain Oates...

I noticed when hoovering behind the sofa the other day that bits of this blog / podcast page seem to have stopped working. Looks like the feed URLs have expired though lack of use. Since there's little prospect of resurrecting the 'cast in the near future, I'm gonna simply remove the player from this page, and then let it slowly gather dust.

Thanks to all who've listed and all who have allowed me to play their music.

I still have a lottery ticket which may yet save me from dancing an often difficult jig in a life of corporate slavery, in which case a new podcast may emerge.

Music and mumblings' journey, however, is now completed.

Agonies of Indecision

Well, I hoped by now that I'd be settling down to a fairly regular podcast, but the 'time worms' are still feeding on my leisure hours and it's not proving possible for the moment. So, I'm gonna bite the bullet and say that, for the time being at least (never slam a door behind you), music and mumblings is wrapped up.

Ive had some incredibly good fun in the short time I was podcasting regularly, made some great new friends, and discovered (from other podcasts and my own investigations) some fantastic music. While I wont be actively digging for new stuff for a while, I will certainly be keeping my eyes open for new stuff from (amongst others) Lord Numb, SpidersLeg, Azoora and Dudley Saunders.

I'll be doing some writing (blog, maybe a couple of books) and maybe I might be able to pop up like a bad penny on Pete's PC Podcast once in a while (that IS how I started). Hopefully the lads will let me gatecrash the occasional podcrawl. For now, though, "that's it".

So, it remains only to say thank you to the people who made the music I've played, and the people who've listened to my efforts. 's been fun!

Seething Wells

Just learned that Steven Wells - who when I saw him was called "Seething Wells" - a ranting poet has succumbed to cancer at the age of 49.

1981, I think it was - at a festival called Futurama in Stafford. We'd gone because Jah Wobble (who'd just left Public Image Ltd) was supposed to be playing. Didn't show though, so we made do with Bow Wow Wow, Simple Minds and a few others belting out their nbest efforts in a Cattle Hall which had almost totally been cleared of cowshit. Almost, but not completely. There are some pictures of that very festival here (look for Sept 6th 1981).

Seething Wells popped up at some point. A ranting skinhead up on stage decrying the 'Tetley Bittermen'. Main reason I remember it was for the line "You have to be a real man to drink Tetleys", which was funny only because it was a favourite tipple of my pal's mum.

Perhaps less earthshaking news to the music world than MJ - but somehow I preferd Well's style...

Not dead yet

Hi Folks,

Its been a bad month for people shuffling off their mortal coil, hasn't it? We've had MJ and Farrah check out recently, and there's not been many signs of life from Music and Mumblings, has there?

Well, fear not (unless you hate the podcast, in which case be very, very afraid) because I have not given up on podcasting (or grumbling). I'm just too dratted busy to do it justice right now, and I'm not going to dump any half done rubbish on you. And anyway, I do this for the fun of it - mine and yours (as well, of course as the very important promotion of the artists' work).

There's still bucketloads of top chunes out there, and I reckon (hope?) Ill be back with a decent show (relatively speaking) in the autumn (after I've travelled the length and breadth of the country by motorbike with my pal Bob The B'stard).

Meantime, I'm still knockin' about - you can always drop me a mail if you want!

What's a podcast, and how do I get it?

A few people have asked me what a podcast is, and how they can actually get hold of them. Here's an attempt to explain both, with some heavy plagiarism... Sources plundered include Wikipedia, and Pete Cogle. I recommend the keen student visit both sites.

What is it then?

A podcast is a series of programmes - audio or video, stored as files on a server. These are distributed via the internet and can be consumed by manually downloading or streaming via a player on a website. What differentiates podcasts from any other file of this type is that, using appropriate software, you can 'subscribe' to them - ensuring that each one is downloaded to your machine as it is released. Examples of this kind of software include iTunes and Juice. A lot of podcast catcher software is free, and so are most (though not all) podcasts.

Neologists have probably already spotted that 'podcast' is a word made from two others - iPod and Broadcast. The iPod was the first portable device at which podcasts were targeted.

In recent times, Apple has been rumoured to be taking a dim view of what it sees as a misappropriation of its trademarks. This means that many objects which incorporated 'pod' in their names have renamed themselves - examples might include Juice (formerly iPodder) and Mevio (formerly BT Podshow).

This week I have some time off work - which I am dedicating to indoor pastimes with no heavy lifting. Yesterday was nicely taken care of by a few hours at the Science Museum in London followed by a quick pint in Covent Garden with none-other than Lord Numb who was, as you can see here, in top form. Today is partially dedicated to throwing together a podcast. A little different this time. May the fourth be with you!

It’s a Sunday afternoon in the middle of a long weekend, and I’m sitting here absolutely relishing the fact that I haven’t got to go to work tomorrow. So far, it’s been pretty good – Saturday and today has been spent toiling in the garden, but I spent Friday in London with a bunch of work friends over from the US. We did some good touristy things which, despite living less than thirty miles from London all my life I’ve never done before. We had a good look round the British Museum and a trip to the Tower of London. No surprise to hear that one of my favorite parts of the tower was the torture exhibition I guess…

On the subject of torture, I was chatting to my neighbor down the pub this week. Variously known as Lord Lard of Lardistan, Bob the Bastard and Ciderman, depending on what time of day it is; he happily informed me that he had been torturing the folks at his workplace that day by forcing them to listen to back-to-back episodes of this very podcast… He claims that’s seventy-odd people which, if its true, probably doubles my listener base at this point! As usual, Bob spent a considerable portion of the next day sending his drinking pals text messages complaining that they forced him to drink too much cider (two and a half pints) and that he was feeling poorly.

If you listened in to the last Mumu, you’ll know that I mentioned Humphrey Lyttleton and his Radio Show “I’m sorry, I haven’t a clue”. Well, I was talking to Codger Cogle about the very same thing last week, and I see that this week he has brought forth his own tribute to a very funny man by calling episode 215 of PC Podcast “I’m sorry, I haven’t a pod”. In this, he’s recreated quite a lot of the games and innuendo to be found in the radio show, one of which is based on charades. I remember once playing charades with Pete, where we had to mime the names of various indie bands to each other. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever forget the sight of the usually garrulous Codger trying to bring off Emily and the Orgasm Addicts without using his mouth.

Consumer news time now. It seems that another one of America’s favourite things is invading the UK. Yup, Oreos are coming. These iconic cookies, or biscuits as we like to call them in the UK, are hugely popular in the US, but the jury is out as to whether they will be such a hit here. One of the worlds foremost experts in biscuits runs the peculiarly English website http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com/ and he was quoted in the BBC news as saying he wasn’t too keen. Personally, I did find them not quite to my taste. Like custard creams with a difference, and, unsatisfactory, in fact. Momentous news this week in London, where the famous Red Ken – a Mayor named after a series of Salon Hair Care products has finally been thrown on the rubbish heap by Londoners who fancy a change. Now I’m not too much up on politics because, as Rowley Cutler said this week, whoever you vote for, the government will get in. On this occasion, though, the new Mayor, Boris Johnson, is a member of the conservative party. The electors have give the UKs governing New Labour party a good kicking, and the Conservatives were definitely displaying some Euphoria. Which just happens to be the name of an album by New York based Echo Screen, from which this track, Gloria, is taken.

Personal Computers, which have previously been banned under Fidel Castro’s regime, are finally available in Cuba. However, it might be a while before Cubans start getting in to podcasts – for one thing, there’s no private access to the internet in Cuba, and for another, a PC costing 400 quid is a little out of reach of the average person there, who earns less than ten pounds a week… Someone’s clearly Havana laugh… sorry.

Well, I’ve been a little more talkative than I was in the last episode, where I was suffering from Jetlag, and feeling decidedly jaded.
